Hidden Bay Leadership and Outdoor Education Center – Parry Sound, Cambridge Photographer

Early this summer I had the pleasure of working with Hidden Bay Leadership Camp and Outdoor Education Center on Lake Shebeshekong, near Parry Sound, Ontario to capture some images for their promotional material.   Carinna, the Center’s director,  and I worked out a date for the shoot and a fall back date, just in case the weather wasn’t co-operating.  As luck would have it, the weather gods co-operated on the day we had selected and I had a great morning taking in the site, and meeting many of the kids and staff while getting a good selection of images.

Leadership and fun are big themes at the camp and as I talked to the kids and staff it became clear to me that everyone absolutely loved being there.  Several had been there for 2, 3, 4 years and more, and many of the staff had originally attended as campers.

While I was at the camp I saw kids getting instruction in wilderness first aid, kayaking, canoeing, and archery, while others were building one of a kind creations in the craft center.

The camp has a large forested acreage on Lake Shebeshekong, a great beach and waterfront, a series of comfortable platform tents and a huge, modern dining hall and main building, that has a large, clean, kitchen staffed by a skilled chef.  As well there are a number of out buildings.

As I wrapped up the shoot at the camp and we got some group shots I circled back for a chat with Carinna and found out they also have the capability to host weddings, so for folks looking for an alternative wedding venue it may be worthwhile giving Hidden Bay Leadership Camp & Outdoor Education Center a call at 705-342-7345 and speaking to their director, Carinna Pellett.

Awesome Art – “Instruments for Free Space” Cambridge Galleries – Cambridge-Parry Sound Photographer

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting a unique and intersting display at Cambridge Gallieries – Queens Square.  Named Instruments for Free Space - The display was striking in that it sits bathed in light, in the middle of a large darkened room.  When patrons enter the room there is silence and then within a few seconds a magical sound creation that blends with the visual display to transport the mind to a place of peace and thought.

The display runs until July 2 so if your in the Cambridge area I urge you to stop by and experience it.  I was fortunate to be allowed to take some images of the display and have posted a few of them below along with some information on the artists and the gallery.

Instruments for Free Space

[The User] & Xiaojing Yan

CURATED BY IGA JANIK

May 20 – July 2, 2011

Instruments for Free Space combines two very distinct installation works in sound and sculpture respectively.  While both works are created with the use of common objects their ultimate function is an architectural undertaking of sorts, making the instruments in the exhibition a tool for activating space in unorthodox ways.

Created by [The User] – Thomas McIntosh & Emmanuel Madan, a Montreal based collective, Quartet for Dot Matrix Printers is a full scale musical composition written for and performed by a collection of obsolete dot matrix printers.  The quartet, while nostalgically and imposingly reminding us that it is being performed by a team of industrial machines, is a unique composition vaguely resembling a classical music score.  Its impeccable recording combined with precise sound requirements for installation animates the space through a physical experience of sound as an architectural tool.

In contrast, the grandness of Bridge, an installation work by Xiaojing Yan, exists in the silence of this sculptural work comprised of over 1500 Chinese porcelain spoons suspended from the ceiling and hung in mid air. Their rigorous arrangement gives full form of a Chinese bridge structure.  While it is silent and delicate the composition as a whole commands itself as a full scale architectural structure. Its industrial history of mass produced objects (the spoons) is emphasized by the continuous aria of printers’ composition.

Flip Event and Meeting Planning Inc. – Event photography – Muskoka – Parry Sound

Yesterday I did a post about Sandy MacIntryre and the celtic group “Steeped in Tradition”.   Today I want to profile the great corporate event planning and production company – Flip Event and Meeting Planning Inc. that designed the evening.   I shoot a fair number of corporate events and this one was one of the nicest I have seen,  everything was done in a Celtic theme with even the resort staff servicing the event wearing celtic garb.   Below are a few more images from the event, including one of Joan,  one of Flip Event’s key people and the piper, both in full celtic dress.  Flip Events is based in both the GTA and Muskoka and provides a wide range of services, including  event planning and production, event design, entertainment and team building.

Sandy MacIntryre – Steeped in Tradition – Event Photography – Muskoka – Parry Sound

Recently I was photographing a special event for a corporate client and I had the pleasure of hearing, seeing and photographing Sandy MacIntrye and the group “Steeped in Tradition”.  Sandy and the group are orginally from Cape Breton and they play a stirring brand of traditional Cape Breton fiddle music.   Sandy has been playing stiring Celtic music for over forty years and is a well know player and teacher of Cape Breton fiddling having performed and conducted workshops throughout the USA, Canada and abroad.  As the evening got started  the magical celtic sounds filled the hall we were in and had everyone moving to the music.  In keeping with the celtic theme of the event there were three great stepdancers an awesome piper and a full assortment of celtic decorations.  A few images from the evening follow. Kate Felsman assisted me with the shoot and took some of the room decor shots I have posted below.
